Dedicated to the conservation of marine animals through rescue, rehabilitation, research, and education

MARS is a federally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a Letter of Agreement from the National Marine Fisheries Services to rescue, rehabilitate and release stranded marine mammals. We are based out of Miami, FL with trained personnel located in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties.

We were founded in 1996 and have worked jointly with Florida International University and other stranding network participants in the rescue and release of injured marine mammals. Every animal that we come across provides us with a unique opportunity to learn about these wonderful animals. With all interactions, we absorb and document as much data as possible to disseminate to the university and south Florida community. If you are interested in having a MARS' representative visit your school or organization, please do not hesitate to ask.

The staff and members of MARS are dedicated to promoting the preservation of marine mammals by giving them a second chance at life through rescue, rehabilitation, rescue and release. The marine mammal center at MARS is the only rehabilitation facility in South Florida that accepts stranded dolphins and whales. When a marine mammal strands, MARS representatives are dispatched to rescue the injured animal and transport it to the marine mammal center. Meanwhile, MARS staff, veterinarians, and volunteers prepare for the animal's arrival. Rehabilitation begins immediately, and the animal is cared for 24 hours a day.

The rehabilitation process can be lengthy and costly due to expensive tests, medical equipment, and antibiotics which are sometimes needed to properly diagnose and treat an animal. Nevertheless, the scientific, conservation, and educational rewards obtained from each stranding are immense and even greater when MARS successfully releases a marine mammal back to the wild!

MARS is also involved in educating South Florida and it's visitors about the unique group of marine animals in the area and the environment where they live. School programs, newsletters, fact sheets, meetings, and adult programs are aimed at teaching about the marine environment, it's inhabitants, and how to conserve both so future generations can enjoy.

We have so much more to learn about our friends of the sea. MARS participates in and undertakes research programs to increase the understanding of these animals. Clinical, life history, behavioral, and physiological studies are just some areas of MARS research. If you are having an event where you would like to have a MARS representative visit your group, please feel free to contact us for more information. Additionally, if you are interested in receiving training on marine mammals, their habitat, life history, behavioral, or plain simply curious, drop us a line and we will be more than happy to answer your questions.
